Your home is one of your greatest accomplishments. It is the one place in this world that you can call yours and truly enjoy peace when you want to just get away. A home is much more than a stack of bricks and a roof that covers it. It is your own personal place of refuge and there is no end to what this is worth to have. For these reasons, to name a few, it should be of great importance for you to keep your house in good condition. You need to do what you can to keep the elements from taking their toll on your home, as things such as rain can eventually cause pretty serious water damage to many of the exterior items of your home such as your deck. Fortunately, preventing water damage to your deck can be avoided easily if you know how to do it.
The deck on the back of your home is constructed of wood that has been treated with a chemical that is supposed to help the wood withstand the elements and prevent deterioration. While this does help a little, over a short period of time you will see the first signs of weather beaten wood if you do not take any additional preventative measures. There are many products on the market to help make the wood on your deck more durable, as well as beautify it to your taste. There are stains and paints specifically for the exterior wood of a home that will not only make it stand up to water better, but will also make the wood look the way you want it to so that it will flow with the design and decor of your home better.
If you have just built a new deck, you will want to be sure to wait for several hot and dry days to allow the pressure treated wood to dry and cure before you will be able to do anything to it. After it has dried out well, you will want to take a low powered pressure washer and clean the entire deck really well. After this step, you will want to allow the wood to dry again for a few days. Now you are ready to apply your desired sealant, whether it is a stain or paint, and seal the deck evenly with a paint brush. You may want to apply a few coats for the best results. Be sure to do this when you know that the weather will be sunny and dry for several days afterwards. This is a process you will want to do repeatedly every few years, depending on the sealant manufacturer’s recommendations.
If you have a deck that already exists and is in need of sealing, you will want to first clean it well with a medium size pressure washer. Be sure not to get the stream of water too close to the wood, as it could possibly result in putting holes in the wood. Once it is clean and you have replaced any boards that my have been rotted or in need of repair for whatever reason, you are ready to go through the same process as mentioned above. This will allow you to bring your old deck back to like new condition.
There is one more easy way to avoid water damage to your deck that I would like to mention and it actually doesn’t involve wood at all. A popular product that started up North and is now getting national attention years later is synthetic decking materials. These pieces of composite boards actually have a look very similar to wood but do not get affected by water and other outdoor elements as wood does. This is an excellent alternative to using real wood if you don’t mind paying a little more money up front.
